Archaeology Seminar Series : Down the Garden Path”: Experiments in Spatially Modeling Palaeoeconomy |

From an archaeological perspective the nature of the ‘palaeoeconomy’ has been
a generally vague construct; being usually qualitatively addressed, and then
typically only in more socially complex settings. But by using a combination of
quantitative methods available in GIS and spatial analysis, it becomes possible
to develop a series of models that allow cognitive interpretation of much greater
depth and richness. This largely arises from map algebra using caloric models
and mobility analyses of friction surfaces. In this case study, such models
evolved from a sequential process and have led to interpretations involving
resource predictability, foraging strategies, productivity, prey resilience,
technological innovation, sustainability, dietary preference, competition, gender
roles, perception, storage of surplus, exchange, and social control. The question
arises where does this “garden path” lead (both interpretively and theoretically)?
And where is it headed?
