WORKSHOP: Role of Committee Executive Officer

This workshop will provide you with information about the purpose and functions of committees at The University of Western Australia and the contribution of the role of the executive officer towards the effective and efficient functioning of the committee(s) they service. Module 1 is a two-part workshop which occurs on separate days and participants are strongly encouraged to attend both parts: Part One provides a broad understanding of the contexts in which the executive officer operates. Understanding the University committee system is pivotal to the work of an executive officer. How do committees contribute to the governance and administrative functions of the University? How do committees interact at various levels? What are the roles and responsibilities of an executive officer? How can you be a ‘pro-active’ executive officer? What are the challenges faced by an executive officer and how are they addressed? This workshop addresses some of the key issues and aims to provide a better understanding of the contexts in which executive officers operate. Part Two deals with the core business of agenda and minutes writing and record-keeping. Clear, succinct and informative agenda papers contribute significantly to successful meetings. The preparation and writing of such papers can be a rewarding experience for the committee executive officer. The committee executive officer can support and complement the work of the chair and the committee by taking the notes in a meeting and converting them to a sound, concise and succinct set of minutes.
