Graphical displays of data are being used more and more, and people with design skills are adding considerably to the impact of what statisticians present. Data journalism is emerging to play an important role in the media, as large datasets full of interesting information are made publicly available. All of this means that statisticians need to rethink how they go about preparing and working with graphics displays.
At the moment graphical work concentrates on presentation graphics (graphics to attract attention) and we need to move on to concentrate more on exploratory graphics (graphics to direct attention). This is a field with great potential, especially on the web, and there is a lot to be done.
