Professor Steve Hopper AC moved to London in 2006 to be the Director of Kew Gardens. He spent six years there and led the organisation through celebrations for its 250th anniversary in 2009. He is a plant conservation biologist, best known for pioneering research leading to positive conservation outcomes in southwest Australia and for the collaborative description of 300 new plant taxa. Apart from extensive research in southwest Australia, Stephen Hopper has explored Australian deserts and conducted field research in the USA and South Africa. He is now back in Western Australia working as the Winthrop Professor of Biodiversity at the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management in Albany.
