Title: Sporadic physical processes driving temperature and nutrient variability in the coastal ocean: a comparative study over the East and West Australian continental shelves.

Abstract: Shelf physical processes forced by high-frequency alongshore winds and currents are known to influence the properties of coastal waters, with contrasting situations along the East and West coasts of Australia. Although upwelling-favourable wind blows almost permanently over WA, there is no persistent upwelling due to the anomalous alongshore pressure gradient associated with the Leeuwin Current (LC). Off southeast Australia, downwelling-favourable winds generally prevail but can occasionally reverse. Moreover, the East Australian Current (EAC) interacting with the shelf-break can lead to topographic-upwelling. While some localised upwelling events have been documented at specific periods/locations, their spatio-temporal variability is not entirely known. Using a multi-sensor approach combining in-situ and satellite data, this talk analyses the climatological variability of these processes along both East and West coasts of Australia. Along WA, the strength of localised upwelling is mainly influenced by the upwelling-favourable winds, the characteristics of the LC (e.g. onshore geostrophic flow, mesoscale structures, stratification and nitracline) and the local topography. Over the southeast Australian shelf, the location and intensity of the EAC’s southward flow, the coastline orientation and the periods of wind-reversals are important factors controlling the occurrence of current- and wind-driven upwellings. Although sporadic nutrient enrichments of variable magnitude can occur anywhere at anytime along these coasts, our results suggest they are strongly favoured at certain seasons/latitudes, having important impacts on coastal ecosystems.

Bio: After a general scientific background (Life Sciences Engineer, 2006), I graduated in June 2010 from my Ph.D. in Physical and Biological Oceanography at the LEGOS laboratory (www.legos.obs-mip.fr Toulouse, France) studying the influence of mesoscale physical processes on marine ecosystems in Eastern Boundary Upwellings (http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00504979). I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Oct 2010 - Dec 2012) with the Fluid Dynamics, Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Research Group in the School of Mathematics & Statistics, UNSW, Sydney (http://research.unsw.edu.au/people/dr-vincent-rossi).
