Naval operations critically depend on each operator’s Situation Awareness of their combat systems. Extant query-based measures of situation awareness that require interruption of tasks are inappropriate in certain military contexts. A candidate real-time query-based method, the Situation Present Assessment Method (SPAM), has been identified by Australian and United States Defence Departments as a potential tool to measure situation awareness in submarines. These Defence Departments funded the UWA Human Factors Laboratory to establish the predictive validity, concurrent validity and sensitivity of the SPAM method of situation awareness measurement in simulated submarine track management. The talk will describe these simulations and the results.
After the talk, there will be an opportunity for nibbles and drinks at the University Club, courtesy of the School. So please hang around afterwards and join us for a few drinks at the club.
