In education, the role of assessment is ubiquitous and indispensable. However, even though it is intended to enhance performance, because it has the potential to corrupt learning, ‘teaching to the test' has a pejorative connotation. In academe, a relatively new phenomenon of being assessed by one index or another has similarly become ubiquitous and indispensable. By analogy to the corruption of learning by 'teaching to the test' to enhance performance, I will consider the potential for corruption of research by 'publishing to the index' to enhance performance. I will also outline some conditions that might resist such corruption.
