Each year we are reminded of Gallipoli and the ANZAC tradition. But have you ever wondered why we were there fighting the Turks? After all, it had only been sixty years since the Crimean war, when Britain and France had invaded the Russian Crimea as allies of Turkey. How it came about is an intriguing, sad and little-known story.
About the Speaker:
Jim Everett came to Australia in 1965 as a ten-pound Pom, for a post-doctoral course in Geophysics at the Australian National University. Fieldwork took him from the Nullarbour westward in wintertime. Standing on the escarpment looking down on Perth, he felt like Abraham seeing the Promised Land. So he came to Perth and joined the oil industry, working for West Australian Petroleum and then for Woodside. Having computer experience, he was assigned to do project evaluations. Losing arguments with accountants, he did a couple of business degrees part-time at the University of Western Australia. UWA was starting the MBA course and wanted lecturers with industry experience, so he returned to academia for thirty years in the UWA Economics and Commerce Faculty, which became the Business School. Since retirement as Emeritus Professor in Information Management five years ago, he has continued to publish and to consult, mainly to the mining industry. Most old blokes lose their faculties, but he has recently gained one, joining the UWA School of Earth and Environment as an Adjunct Professor in the Centre for Exploration Targeting.
