Developing an oceanographic modelling, observing, monitoring and forecasting system around southern Africa : SESE and Oceans Institute Seminar Other events...
In this seminar, various aspects of the unique major western and eastern boundary current systems along the east and west coasts of southern Africa (Agulhas and Benguela Current Systems) around southern Africa will be discussed in the light of new oceanographic developments in Cape Town in the Department of Oceanography, University of Cape Town. These include the newly formed the Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research, the French involvement through a programme called ICEMASA, the CSIR/NR national Centre of Excellence ACCESS (African Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Science), and the ASCLME (Augulhas Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystem). These centres are at the forefront of using numerical circulation modeling (ROMS and HYCOM); in situobserving systems, and satellite remote sensing measurements. The differentinstitutes are working together to start operational forecasting around southern Africa in an endeavour named OceanSAfrica.
