SPEAKER Mike Webster "Adding years to your life (or at least looking like it) adaptation and the perception of facial age" : The perceived characteristics of a face can be strongly biased by adaptation to faces seen previously Other events...
The perceived characteristics of a face can be strongly biased by adaptation to faces seen previously. These aftereffects have been found for many of the attributes characterizing natural variations in the face including identity, gender, and expression. We are exploring the impact of adaptation on judgments of facial age. Previously we showed that adaptation to a young or old face shifts the category boundary for classifying an individual as old vs. young. These aftereffects occur for both the textural and shape changes associated with aging, but are more strongly driven by the facial texture. In current work we are exploiting the fact that observers are relatively good at inferring a specific age from a face, so that it is possible to assess how adaptation affects faces drawn from different points throughout the lifespan. This provides a unique metric for examining the actual form of the response changes underlying adaptation to an important dimension of face perception, and I will consider how it can be used to test a number of unresolved questions about face adaptation, such as the role and nature of norms in the adaptation.
