Human communication systems evolve and socio-cultural processes play an important role in this process. The cultural mechanisms that guide this evolution are not well understood. Using a laboratory study that is extended by computer simulations, we test three mechanisms through which human communication systems may evolve: Neutral drift, local coordination and selection. Our results indicate strong support for a selection-based account.
