Dr Craig Cormick from Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.
Title: The 'War on Science': Lessons from the trenches.
Abstract: In a world of conflicting media outlets, fragmented audiences, how do you ever know if your message is getting across? If you are interested in ensuring that your work is being effectively communicated to a wide range of audiences, then listening to what Craig has to say is highly recommended.
Craig Cormick has been working in communicating contentious science issues for over a decade, including GM foods, stem cells, climate change and nanotechnology. He has published several articles on challenges for communicating with diverse or hostile audiences, as well as the reasons that many people in the community are disengaged from science. This talk will use case studies to look at the challenges from recent fracturing of both audiences and media - including online media, research into disengaged audiences and the values that drive different attitudes towards or against science.
