Luba Kalaydjieva obtained her medical degree at the Higher Medical Institute in Sofia, and a PhD in biochemical genetics at the Moscow Institute of Pediatrics. Her career in Bulgaria has been devoted to setting up and developing services and research in the field of human and medical genetics. She has also worked at the Institutes of Biological Chemistry and of Human Genetics of the University of Münster in Germany, as a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and at the Department of Genetics of Stanford University School of Medicine as a visiting scientist. In Australia, she has served as Co-Director of the Centre for Human Genetics at Edith Cowan University. Since 2002, she is Professorial Fellow in Molecular Genetics at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, UWA. She was awarded the Spinoza Visiting Professorship of the University of Amsterdam in 2003. Luba’s studies of the genetic basis of schizophrenia are in collaboration with the Centre for Clinical Research in Neuropsychiatry, addressing the clinical and genetic heterogeneity of the disorder and the potential of neuropsychological characterisation to facilitate the identification of susceptibility genes.
