What happens to individuals’ performance on psychometric assessments when they reapply for the same job, having been rejected in the past? In a world where psychometric testing is becoming increasingly popular, questions like these are becoming very important, though research into the area has been somewhat scarce. In this colloquium, I report on my investigations of changes in performance on cognitive ability, situational judgement and personality tests of repeat applicants in a highly competitive personnel selection context. In doing so, I share with the audience experiences of my journey that this research took me on through the complex world of faking and impression management, and report on two ‘laboratory’ investigations aimed to improve our understanding of these phenomena. The journey ends where it began, and I conclude by returning to my original research question and offering a range of future research ideas.
