Rebuilding Harmony 2011 : 9/11 Ten Years On: Rebuilding Harmony - One-Day Conference Organized by CMSS@UWA Other events...
The terrorist attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001 catapulted the world into a new era of interstate and global relations. The lexicon of terrorism and counter-terrorism entered the vocabulary of policymakers, analysts and ordinary citizens. The subsequent years and continuing militant attacks in the name of jihad around the world have also contributed to the identification of Islam and Muslims as a threat to stability and safety.

Paradoxically, the tragic events have also provided the impetus for greater understanding, cooperation and interaction among Muslims and others. Interfaith dialogue as well as cooperation among community groups has emerged as a major feature of today’s globalised world. Governments have also become party to the project of rebuilding harmony at local and global levels.

The One-day conference organized by the Centre for Muslim States and Societies (CMSS) at the University of Western Australia on 11 September 2011 explores the nature of this cooperation and interaction. A number of nationally and internationally renowned scholars, practitioners and members of grass-root and faith organizations will address the following questions:

• How have local communities, governments and international organizations engaged to rebuild harmony in a world torn by fear of terrorism?

• What role has faith communities played in rebuilding harmony and understanding between Muslims and other communities locally and globally?

• How have the tragic experiences of 9/11 shaped the approach by Muslim scholars to issues related to International Humanitarian Law?

• How the emerging interfaith/inter-communal dialogue has found support in sports, arts and literature?

• How can the agenda of peace be continued in the decades to come? Who are the existing and potential partners in this project, and what support they need?

• How could we harness the positive energy that was unleashed from the tragic experience of 9/11?
