Even after stripping away the romantic fiction that gathered around the story of Eileen Joyce through film and popular biography, the facts of her early life that would lead to an international concert career are quite extraordinary. They will be described in this talk.
About the Speaker
Together with two of his colleagues – Dr Victoria Rogers and Jean Farrant Harvey- Emeritus Professor David Tunley is preparing a new book on Eileen Joyce that deals with the influences that shaped her musical life. Despite its remoteness the WA Goldfields enjoyed a surprisingly lively musical environment as reflected in the pages of the Kalgoorlie Miner and other sources. The ‘discovery’ of Eileen Joyce’s gifts by a visiting music examiner is now a matter of legend, and the talk will include this as well as events in the two years following this in Perth at Loreto Convent.
