SEMINAR: Machine Learning Methods in Functional Genomics."
Cao Nguyen will present machine learning approaches in functional genomics including methods (i.e. hidden Markov models, Bayesian networks) to predict protein interfaces and to annotate functions for proteins from protein interaction networks. Cao’s talk includes methods to predict the key components (proteins) in signaling pathways using a combination of inductive machine learning and fuzzy cognitive map. Cao will also present an information synthesis based on multi sensory spiking neural networks for discovering molecular pathways. In addition, Cao will introduce a new method recently developed by Professor Morahan to define genetic interactions in complex diseases such as type 1 diabetes, schizophrenia.
Cao Nguyen received his PhD degree in Computer Science and Computational Biology from the University of Colorado, Denver. After a postdoctoral period at the Virginia Commonwealth University where he developed novel machine learning algorithms including fuzzy cognitive map, clustering, spiking neural nets to identify genetic interactions in complex genetic diseases (i.e. Down Syndrome), Cao was appointed as a Research Assistant Professor at UWA in 2011. He will be involved with high-level computational analyses of genetic data and integration with gene expression and phenotypic information of T1D subjects and subsets. Dr. Nguyen has authored over 15 research articles and conference papers.
