Recent agricultural growth in China has mostly been driven by yield per unit area increase rather than by expansion of the cultivated area. This lecture discusses the approach of 'Integrated soil–crop system management' (ISSM) which aims to ensure high productivity and sustainability in the long term, through reducing environmental risk while increasing crop productivity and improving nutrient use efficiency
