Colloquium: Not quite emotions: Sentiments that did not make the grade
In our colloquium slot this week, we have a “special event” presentation by Professor David Konstan, whose visit is jointly sponsored by the UWA Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, and by the School of Psychology’s Centre for the Advancement of Research on Emotion.
Professor Konstan will be presenting a talk entitled “Not Quite Emotions: Sentiments that did not make the grade”. In this presentation he will consider the distinction between those affects that qualify as emotions, and those that do not, according to classical philosophical positions. Originally training as a mathematician, Prof. Konstan is currently Professor of Classics at New York University, having moved there recently after 23 years at Brown University. His principal area of research interest concerns conceptions of emotion, and he has written books on general emotion, friendship, pity, and forgiveness, as well as publishing on aspects of physics, atomic theory, and literary theory.
