The WA branch of the Australian Society of Soil Science (ASSSI) has invited Winthrop Professor Hans Lambers to give a Soil&Water Seminar at 11am on Tues, May 17th. All welcome!

TITLE: “Sharing my experience as Editor in Chief of Plant and Soil - stories that could fill a book”

ABSTRACT: What does it take to become the Editor in Chief of Plant and Soil? And what does it require to remain in that position for a prolonged period? What are the rewarding elements of being an Editor, and what experiences would one rather not encounter? These questions probably set the scene for what I want to talk about during my seminar. It will be a story of my personal experiences with and the success of Plant and Sol in the recent past. I will not hesitate to promote the journal and show my audience how well we have done, using hard facts, of course. It will also be about what (not) to do when preparing a manuscript for publication.

In my seminar, I will quote a soil scientist I highly respect about the similarity of doing research and more mundane activities. It will be an unusual seminar, about a very important aspect of science, but without dealing with scientific results in the usual manner. I may include examples of what not to engage in science, such as fraud and plagiarism, but there will be examples where, for various reasons, authors of Plant and Soil have provide examples of what should not be engaged in. Copyright issues will be discussed.

We live in a rapidly changing world, where countries with rising economies and their own tradition contribute to a major extent to journals with a typically Western Tradition. Inevitably, there will be clashes. The question is how these clashes can be managed while maintaining our Western Tradition. Clearly, my seminar won’t have all the answers, but I will do my best to point out some of the problems many of us are facing when publishing our results in the international literature.
