Within the rich, diverse history of trade unionism, the identity, role and purpose of workplace organization is continuously contested. Whilst acknowledging the way the historical geography of capital accumulation shape these issues, the paper considers the potential power agency (leadership and vision) has in transforming the structure, strategy and goals of the organization rather than simply reproducing historical forms. The issue of agency is considered within the context of union accommodation or/and resistance to organizational and work restructuring driven by free trade, investment and finance. The central argument may be summarized thus: challenging market necessity (restructuring) requires a new politics, activating struggle in the workplace and in civil society, whilst also extending the spatial reach of unionism and other civil society actors to access new forms of power. These issues are grounded in the historical shifts of Australian trade unionism where a changing social democratic politics is compared and contrasted with a politics of liberation in the global south. The Presenter: Rob Lambert is an author of Grounding Globalization: Labour in the Age of Insecurity, Blackwell, 2008, which was the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Book of the Year in 2009. The core theme of the book is the psychological and social impacts of corporate restructuring, which has been a focus of Lambert’s work over the past decade and it is this theme which informs his analysis of the trade union role under free market globalization. Rob is a Winthrop Professor in the field of employment relations in the UWA Business School.
