The talk will be given by Winthrop Professor Julie Lee, of the UWA Business School. Julie received her PhD from the University of Illinois in 1996. Her current research focuses on the theory, measurement and impact of personal values across cultures.
Abstract:
Schwartz (1992) value theory significantly advanced our understanding of the structure of values based on the motivations that underlie them. Support for this theory has been impressive, with data from hundreds of samples indicating people in more than 80 countries recognise these basic values as guiding principles. However, the measurement of this theory has been criticized; leading to refinements in the theory and measurement of values. Our team identified 21 value facets, using a choice-based approach, that empirically support the refined theoretical value structure. These facets also better predict aspects of well-being than the original 10 values.
