The seminar next week is from:
Dennis Stanley, Mun Woo,
Ben Hollings and Christine Hanson
from Australian National Facility for Ocean Gliders (ANFOG) and The UWA Oceans Institute
Title: “Sustained oceanographic observations around Australia using autonomous ocean gliders.”
Abstract:
The developing use of gliders to autonomously conduct oceanographic surveys on unprecedented temporal and spatial scales has the potential to revolutionise our understanding of ocean dynamics. This may be especially true for the Australian region, where a vast coastline is offset by a relatively small human population and a comparatively recent history of oceanographic exploration. Under the auspices of Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), which facilitates sustained research on the impact of major boundary currents on continental shelf environments and ecosystems, the Australian National Facility for Ocean Gliders (ANFOG) has assembled a glider fleet that operates around the country. This seminar will provide:
•Details on the mechanics of ocean glider operation and associated instrumentation
•An overview of glider data access (via IMOS) and recently-developed visualisation software (GLIDERSCOPE)
•Highlights of oceanographic data streams collected off Australia’s west, south and east coasts by ocean gliders since 2009
In the Seminar Room (GO5) on the ground floor of the Oceans Institute building from 12:30 -1:30pm
on Wednesday March 9th , 2011
