DESCRIPTION:Groups and Combinatorics Seminar\n\nGeorge Willis (University
of Newcastle)\n\nwill speak on\n\nTotally Disconnected Groups and Discrete
Mathematics\n\nat 3pm on Tuesday 18th of January in MLR2\n\nAbstract:\nTo
tally disconnected\, locally compact groups are typically not discrete. Th
e potential for using techniques from discrete mathematics to study totall
y disconnected groups arises however because these groups may often be rep
resented as automorphism groups of (infinite) discrete structures. Analogy
with the study of automorphism groups of finite structures as well as spe
cific results about graphs and permutation groups may have a role to play.
\n\nThe talk will begin with a survey of totally disconnected groups\, inc
luding key examples. Particular results and problems which relate to graph
theory\, finite group theory and permutation groups will then be discusse
d.\n\n\nAll welcome.\n\nSpeakers: George Willis
