Colloquium: Illusion, Reality, Canvas, & Camera
|
|
Realism in pictures is an illusion. Identifying the objects in a photograph requires learning to be deluded by perceptual illusions. Those illusions are created by lines and tones, lines and tones that differ in contrast and are juxtaposed in ways that invoke our previous experience. Master painters, photographers and cinematographers all create and manipulate these illusions deliberately, although they often misunderstand the perceptual underpinnings. This talk will explore the perception of naturalistic representation. It will show what artists and photographers must do to fool the world, and how they succeed.
