Economic evaluation has been identified as a key research priority by the World Health Organization.
It is already a mandatory requirement for the introduction of new technologies in some areas, such as the listing of new drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
Unit outline:
In recent years standard methodological approaches have been accepted and formalised for the estimation of cost-effectiveness. Methods are based primarily on economic theory and have been developed specifically for application in the health sector.
This unit comprises:
* concepts in study design
* techniques of economic appraisal including cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis and cost-benefit analysis
* an understanding of standard practices including sensitivity analysis, discounting, willingness to pay and health state utility measurement
* procedures and roles in decision making for resource allocation in health care.
The role of economic evaluation in decision making and policy setting will also be examined both within Australia and internationally.
This five-day, six-point unit consists of a combination of lectures, small-group tutorials and discussion. Examples include ongoing studies and appraisal of the cost-effectiveness literature.
In preparation for the teaching week, you will be sent pre-reading on 19 November 2010.
Who should attend?
The unit has been developed to cater to a wide variation in expertise, although some fundamental experience of economics in health will be assumed. It will provide an understanding of the methodology of economic evaluation for those working in the health sector who have an interest in promoting efficient use of resources.
