Paul Tanner directs an ensemble of six percussionists, including Alison Pratt (Synergy Percussion, and 1995 ABC Young Performer of the Year) in a performance of two vastly different percussive masterworks: Steve Reich's hypnotic Six Marimbas, a wonderfully elegant example of minimalist techniques; and Iannis Xenakis' monumental percussion sextet, Persephassa. Six percussionists with almost identical collections of instruments surround the audience and send musical messages flying around Winthrop Hall. In the climax of Xenakis’ work half of the instrumental sounds are sent whirling in a clockwise direction, whilst the other half are sent spiraling back the other way to produce an astonishing stereophonic sensation.
