Michael Crouch is undertaking a PhD at UWA that is an historical biography of his grandmother: it focuses on her early life in India as a bride, uncomfortably married to a man who rescued her from looking after her mother who withdrew her from university to become a companion. From perhaps becoming one of the first doctors, she turns into a ‘memsahib’ and it is a bitter change. Michael will provide the background to his undertaking a PhD in his later years, after a lifetime in government service overseas, commerce and heavy industry, school teaching and writing books. His has been an epiphany that has appealed to others who have wondered what to do after earning a living.
