Phoenicians in Spain: Trade, Exchange and Cultural Interactions in the Iron Age.
The Bajo de la Campana Shipwreck
This first-ever archaeological excavation and study of a Phoenician shipwreck, located off the south-eastern coast of Spain, is yielding a large and varied assemblage of raw materials from the ship’s cargo—metals, clay, ivory, and wood—as well as more luxurious trade goods—wooden combs, perfumed oil, bronze furniture fixtures, and worked stone and ivory. This research project is using comparative studies of ancient sources and material culture and an array of archaeometrics to investigate trade routes and mechanisms of exchange between Phoenician colonies in Spain and indigenous townships during the Iron Age. Of particular interest is the nature of colonial interaction with local populations that controlled access to the hinterland and its mineral and agricultural wealth, and the cultural mechanisms employed by Phoenician mercantile concerns to exploit and monopolize these bountiful resources.
