A screening of the award winning film Maati Maay (A Grave-keeper’s Tale) followed by a conversation with the producer, writer and director, Chitra Palekar

Maati Maay is based on a short story by Mahasweta Devi and tells the story of a beautiful young mother, trapped between her instincts and needs and the compulsions of her ancestral duties as dictated by the social system. The language of Maati Maay is Marathi (with English subtitles). The film is a part of internationally renowned, parallel cinema in numerous Indian languages. It is in the tradition of Satyajit Ray’s Bengali films and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Malyalam films.

After the screening (approx 98 minutes), producer, writer and director, Chitra Palekar will discuss the film with the audience.

This lecture is free and open to the public, no RSVP required.
