Friends of the Library talk : Many years a thief: the tragic story of the first European executed in Western Australia Other events...
In 1844, John Gavin, a 15-year-old boy, became the first European to be executed in the colony of Western Australia. He had arrived in Fremantle just months earlier, one of a group of juvenile convicts taking part in an attempted rehabilitation scheme. David Hutchison will tell how he first learned of John Gavin’s tragic story, and will describe the research he undertook to write his novel Many years a thief.
Speaker(s) David Hutchison was born in Perth in 1927 and now lives in Fremantle. David has degrees in civil engineering and history, and a Diploma of Education, and has taught physics, lectured on the history and philosophy of science, and been an adult educator. In 1970 he became the first Curator of History at the Western Australian Museum, and is an inaugural Honorary Fellow of the National Museum of Australia. He retired in 1985 to work as a museologist and heritage consultant. His publications include: A town like no other (Benedictine community at New Norcia); Fremantle walks (Fremantle Press), articles, essays, poetry, short fiction and botanical illustrations.
