Australians in business, education and in the wider private sector are used to the idea that they are connected through extensive networks. Individuals, businesses and government bodies all communicate ceaselessly with each other, leveraging each other’s abilities in pursuit of our goals.
Australia’s international engagement would benefit from greater utilisation of private sector networks. The federal government does and should determine our foreign policy priorities – socalled “first track diplomacy”. Where private organisations and individuals can make a very valuable contribution is in advancing our foreign policy and our trade and investment priorities through wider engagement, including “second track diplomacy”. This should involve a particular focus on the Asia Pacific region, which is so important to Australia’s security and prosperity.
John Denton is Partner & Chief Executive Officer of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, one of Australia’s leading national law firms. John is one of three Prime Ministerial representatives on the APEC Business Advisory Counsel (ABAC), Chair of ABAC’s Sustainable Development Work Group, board member of the Business Council of Australia and Chairman of its Global Engagement Taskforce. John is also Chairman of the Experts Group on Trade and Investment in Indonesia, reporting into the Minister for Trade.
As a former diplomat with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, John has extensive international negotiating expertise, following postings in Moscow, the United Nations, South Asia and the Middle East. Legal peers have recognised John as a Best Lawyer in their annual list.
