-----------------

Brian's work at the School of Music began in 2005 when he joined the cataloguing team at the Callaway Centre working on the ARC-funded Preserving Australia’s Sound Heritage. This was followed by another ARC project in 2006/07, Sound Footings, for which he was Project Manager. In 2007/08 he worked with W/Prof Jane Davidson as researcher/writer for Creative Sate, a TV reality series on opera. In 2008 Brian commenced working on the ARC-funded project Communicative Human Musicality as an Honorary Research Fellow

For much of his career Brian has worked as a music librarian and senior manager at the State Library of Western Australia. Allied to this is his performing arts career in musical theatre, and he has written the book and lyrics to Nostradamus (Perth Concert Hall, 2002) and the lyrics to The Last Maharajah (Hoxton Hall, London, 2008).

This seminar presentation is base don Brian’s doctoral studies on the evolution of the musical theatre ‘book’ with reference to the works of American dramatist, Peter Stone. Stone was a writer who conquered stage, screen, and television by winning an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy. In 1965, he won an Oscar for his work as a screenwriter on Father Goose. He won Tony Awards for his books for the Broadway musicals Titanic, Woman of the Year and 1776. He won an Emmy for a 1962 episode of The Defenders.
