This lecture will critically explore the contributions that feminist scholarship has made to our understanding of female deities in the ancient Semitic world.

Topics to be discussed will include the notion of a prototypical mother/fertility goddess, the practice of sacred prostitution, and female deities in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.
