Richard Light is a distinguished pulmonologist internationally renowned for his research in pleural disease. He received his MD from the Johns Hopkins University in 1968, and trained at the Johns Hopkins Hospital during which time he published the landmark paper on ‘Light’s Criteria’ for defining exudative pleural effusions. He has subsequently held academic appointments at the Louisiana State University and at the University of California Irvine before taking up his present positions as Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University and Director of the Pulmonary Disease Program at St Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee.
