Following Nicole Kidman’s impassioned testimony to the US Congress in support of the International Violence against Women Act, the Perth Chapter of Young UNIFEM (The United Nations Development Fund for Women) is holding a ‘White Ribbon Day Soiree” to support White Ribbon Day, November 25.
The Young UNIFEM Perth team are asking all West Australians to stand up and speak out about violence against women. To highlight this important issue, and to raise funds for the cause, Young UNIFEM Perth are holding the inaugural White Ribbon Day Soiree. Hosted by Shadow Treasurer and White Ribbon Ambassador Ben Wyatt MLA, the evening will include a screening of the 20 minute documentary ‘Yajilarra’, the story of indigenous women in Fitzroy Crossing who took a stand against violence, and set the community on a path of healing. The film has received international acclaim for dealing with issues of social concern, violence, alcoholism and abuse and was screened recently at the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Within the enchanting surrounds of the University of Western Australia’s Sunken Gardens, Young UNIFEM Perth is expecting a bevy of high-profile White Ribbon Day supporters to attend their inaugural event including WA's White Ribbon Ambassadors, members of State Parliament, sports players, media personalities, West Australian Business leaders and the dedicated volunteers and staff of WA’s community, not-for-profit organisations and charities. With a performance from the students of UWA's School of Music this is sure to be a very special evening.
