The Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences, in conjunction with the newly launched International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) presents an exhibition celebrating 400 years of astronomy.
The exhibition includes:
* Astronomical images from optical telescopes (The World at Night exhibition) and images generated through the use of radio telescopes.
* A scale replica of the proposed Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope dish
* A 12" (30cm) Meade reflector optical telescope.
* A multimedia presentation incorporating: an animation of the proposed SKA site in the Murchison region; "First Light: Eyes to Telescopes" movie with ICRAR Director Professor Peter Quinn, produced by the SPICE team; ICRAR SKA trailer; and a collection of images of astronomical objects taken at infrared, optical, radio and x-ray wavelengths.
* The stunning 22-metre long Cosmic Ribbon showing the evolution of the Universe from the Big Bang to the current day. It displays the content of the Universe at different times, the time and “cosmic distance” at different stages in the evolution, as well as the limits that can be achieved by various kinds of telescopes. Walk along the banner to go back in time and witness key events in the history of our Universe such as first light, the birth of stars, and the formation of galaxies.
The exhibition is open now and will run until Friday 20th November in foyer of the UWA Science Library.
The Science Library is located at the corner of Myers Street and Parkway, map reference http://www.uwa.edu.au/campus_map?id=2028.
