SEMINAR: Fly-in, Fly-out Work - Psychosocial and Human Aspects
An Institute of Advanced Studies Masterclass with Katharine Parkes, Reader in Applied Psychology, University of Oxford and 2009 Senior Gledden Visiting Fellow, UWA.
This masterclass takes a broadly-based approach to psychosocial and human factors aspects of FIFO work, including mining and, in particular, work on offshore oil/gas installations. Relevant topics include work conditions and environmental characteristics; long work hours, fatigue, and accident risk; the effects of day/night shift rosters on circadian adaptation, performance, alertness and sleep; the physical and psychological well-being of personnel; and the impact of FIFO lifestyles on partners and families. Demographic factors, including age and the relative lack of women in the offshore workforce and other FIFO occupations, are also important.
Cost: Free, but Registration is essential to attend. Register at: http://www.ias.uwa.edu.au/masterclass . Registration Closing Date: Thursday, 8 October 2009
