Kit will be presenting his seminar on the New methods of indeterminacy: An analysis and evaluation of note omission,
shortening and contraction.
Over the past 18 months, in work towards a Masters of Music Composition, the composer has developed a new method of achieving indeterminacy in performance that challenges the existing relationships between composer, performance and audience whilst remaining within standard nomenclature. This lecture is comprised of four sections of discussion: 1. A definition of these new indeterminate techniques. 2. An analysis of several compositions by the lecturer which use these techniques. 3. A discussion of changed relationships between composer, performer, and audience embodied in these techniques. 4. An evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses inherent in this compositional method.
Conclusion: Whilst these compositional methods radically alter the standard relationships between composer, performer and audience, these techniques also lack the flexibility of earlier indeterminate techniques, and can only be used effectively for solo or small ensemble works.
