As part of National Science Week (National Speakers Tour), The University of Western Australia is hosting a free public lecture by NASA Astronaut Megan McArthur.
Astronaut McArthur will share stories of her first expedition into space (embarking on the fifth and final service mission for the Hubble Space Telescope), her astronomical career and fascination with science.
BACKGROUND:
In May of 2009, Astronaut Megan McArthur ventured on her first mission into space, embarking on the fifth and final servicing mission for the 19 year old Hubble Space Telescope. She clocked 12 days and 21 hours, travelling 5,276,000 miles in 197 Earth orbits. On the mission, Astronaut McArthur was responsible for the fragile operation of the robotic arm to capture the Hubble Space Telescope and then release it again once the repairs were complete.
Prior to her space adventure, Astronaut McArthur served as the Crew Support Astronaut for the Expedition 9 Crew during their six-month mission aboard the International Space Station. She also worked in the Space Station and Space Shuttle Mission Control Centers as a Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM). In 2006, Astronaut McArthur was the CAPCOM for STS-116. She was also the EVA CAPCOM for the STS-117 mission in 2007.
