The Royal Society of Western Australia Symposium will cover a range of wide ranging subjects: from classic palaeontology to modern concepts in evolution, including evolutionary microbiology, neoLamarckism, transposable elements as facilitators of evolution, to exploration of the predecessors and contemporaries of Darwin.
The list of speakers and the subject matter includes:
Key Note Speaker: Professor Ken McNamara, Cambridge University: Shapes of Time: Fossils, Development and Evolution
Dr Stefan Revets: No man is an island: Evolution before Darwin
Dr Kevin Thiele: The Tree of Life as biology's most important organising metaphor - Theophrastus, Darwin, Haeckel, Hennig, and challenges from modern genetics
Dr Alan Tapper: Philosophical Perspectives on Evolutionary Theory
Dr Ted Steele: Lamarck and Immunity: somatic and germline evolution of antibody genes
Dr Stefan Revets: Alfred Russel Wallace, co-author of the Darwin-Wallace Theory of Evolution
Keith Oliver & Dr Wayne Greene: Transposable elements: powerful facilitators of evolution
Dr Graham O’Hara & Dr Kemanthi Nandasena: New understandings in microbial evolution
Dr Kate Trinajstic: Polymorphism, variation and evolutionary change in early vertebrates from the Gogo Formation, Western Australia
Dr Kate Bryant - Evolution for undergraduates - fostering critical thinkers.
Registration form and details are available on the RSWA website www.rswa.org.au.
Registration for Members will be Free, Non-members $60.00, and Students $30.00. Sponsored places will be available on application. Registration includes lunch and 12 months free Membership to the Royal Society of Western Australia, if required.
