The Middle Ages is often thought to be the height of patriarchy. So how do we account for the fact that the Middle Ages also saw the rise of powerful women rulers, outstanding female dramatists, writers and scholars, great female spiritual leaders, and even Joan of Arc, a woman war-leader?
