This course will discuss the skeletal evidence for the earliest species of humans from the first australopithecines to homo erectus. It will consider where and how each species lived and what the physical changes successive species underwent may mean in terms of their ability to survive and their adaptation to their environment. The earliest stone tools, first evidence for the controlled use of fire, hunting (as against scavenging) for food, etc. will be described. How, when and why humanity first spread out of Africa will be discussed.
