Friends of the Library talk : Medicine and Art Other events...
A powerpoint presentation with commentary of 21 famous paintings by classical artists of either famous medical men and women from years past, such as William Harvey, or medical events, such as the first anaesthetic to be given, or medical clinical conditions, some included by chance in their paintings, some deliberately portrayed, such as the possible cancer of the breast in Rembrandt’s mistress (and model) or Valazquez’s dwarfs. Almost all the paintings are familiar and by well known artists.
Speaker(s) Dr Jim Leavesley emigrated to WA in 1957 after graduating in Medicine from Liverpool University. He has been an honorary senior lecturer at the UWA medical school, and is a Foundation Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practice of which he later became WA President. He is very well known as a medical researcher and speaker on medical history to which he has contributed 10 books and is frequently heard on the ABC, particularly its popular Ockhams Razor on Radio National. He was made a member of the Order of Australia in 1993 and awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Literature by Murdoch University. Often referred to on the ABC Science Show as the good doctor of Margaret River it is where he and his wife now live but do not grow grapes!
