The idea of home

Saturday, 2 September 2006

Home continues to be a complex idea, as we all recognise, signifying a vast range of physical, emotional, and psychic constructions from the domestic to land to memory, and to where we live the length of our lives. By adopting this topic as our theme for this year’s Day of Ideas in Perth, we acknowledge its ongoing centrality in our lives, from ideas of homelessness in a time of plenty, and ‘homelands’—both immediate and ancestral—that are now out of reach of citizenry.

We have invited urban designers, architects, politicians, asylum seekers, writers, and professionals working in public policy to ruminate on this topic in a day of discussion in Perth in September.

The audience will be invited to ask questions and engage in discussion. The purpose of the day is to allow for the raising and sharing of important ideas.

Speakers include: John Hughes, winner of the 2006 National Biography Award; David Ritter on the ethics of home; Professor Geoffrey London, architect; Dr Patric de Villiers, urban planner; Allanah MacTiernan, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure; Dr Penny Flett, Broadwater Care Group, on options for life-long housing; Professor Billie Giles-Corti, Population Health, UWA, on neighbourhoods, health and the built environment; Joan London, writer; Qadar Yazdari (with interpreter) talking about his lost home of Afghanistan, now out of reach;

Registration all day Saturday 2 September ($45/40 concession, includes lunch)
