The theme of the 28th Annual ASAL conference is Spectres, Screens, Shadows, Mirrors in relation to all aspects of Australian culture.

Conference Welcome
The conference commences on the afternoon of Sunday, 2 July. Registrations open at 4pm, and welcome addresses and drinks will commence at 5pm.
Dorothy Green Lecture
Dr Carmen Lawrence MP, Member for Fremantle will deliver the 2006 Dorothy Green Lecture on Sunday, July 2, at 6pm.
Keynote Address
Dr Jennifer Rutherford will present the conference keynote address on Monday, 3 July at 9am.
Jennifer Rutherford is the author of Gauche Intruder: Freud, Lacan and the White Australian fantasy (Melbourne UP) and she directed the documentary Ordinary People (a Film Australian National Interest Project). Her paper will address the conference themes with reference to new work by Paul Carter and Brian Castro's latest novel, The Garden Book.
Guest Writers
A panel featuring local writers, including Gail Jones and John Kinsella, will discuss an influence of Western Australian origin that 'haunts' their writing or intellectual life, on Tuesday 4 July at 3.30pm.
The Westerly Centre will host a session featuring readings from West Australian writers at 6pm for the evening of Tuesday 4 July at 6pm.
Conversations with Gough Whitlam
Gough Whitlam AC QC will speak with Terri-ann White about Australian writing and writers on Wednesday 5 July at 11am.
