‘Writing Out’: the academy in dialogue with a broader culture
a program of seminar and masterclasses for research post-graduates and early career academics co-presented by the Humanities Writing Project, an Australian Research Council funded Linkage-Learned Academies Special Project, and
the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Western Australia
Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st of June 2006
University Club, University of Western Australia
Writing out from the academy takes commitment. It takes commitment to good writing; to dialogue with a broader culture; to the significance of your research and the arguments and narratives embedded within it. It takes belief in the existence of an interested audience and your ability to reach it. Writing out does not mean dumbing down your research, or avoiding difficult material. But it does mean engaging with the intellectual and creative potential of writing. It requires re-thinking your writing as well as rewriting your thinking.
The ‘Writing Out’ event will run over two days with each day divided into a morning seminar and two concurrent afternoon masterclasses. The morning seminars will bring publishers, writers and editors from across the nation into dialogue with research postgraduates and early career researchers in humanities disciplines to discuss publishing options and contemporary practices in non-fiction writing. The afternoon masterclasses will work with participants to develop skills in relation to their specific research and publishing interests.
Masterclass participants will be required to attend the related seminar, and in addition to submission of a 500 word writing task on application, may be asked to prepare some additional writing in advance, details of which will be given with notification of acceptance. While the seminars are open, masterclass numbers will be restricted to 20, and preference will be given to those wishing to attend the whole series.
Anna Haebich, Co-Director of The Centre for Public Culture and Ideas at Griffith University in Queensland, will present a public lecture on the first night of the event and will be a panellist at the second day’s seminar.

About the Project
The Humanities Writing Project aims to encourage humanities scholars, particularly those at early stages of their academic careers, to acquire the skills to write accessibly for non-experts. It has been developed by a group of leading academics and writers from three Australian universities, in partnership with the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
