Biographical note:
David Elliott is the founding Director of the Mori Art Museum that opened in Tokyo in 2003; he was previously the Director of Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden (1996-2001) and Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England (1976-96). From 1998 until 2004 he was President of CIMAM (the International Committee of ICOM for Museums of Modern Art).
Elliott is a cultural historian whose main interests concern contemporary art, Russian avant-garde and the visual cultures of central and eastern Europe and the non-western world during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From the beginning of the 1980s he has formulated a series of pioneering exhibitions which integrated non-western with contemporary art. He has published a large number of books, articles and catalogues on these subjects, as well as curating many exhibitions. He has also written extensively about the present day role and function of museums and contemporary art.
David Elliott, Director of the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, is visiting Australia as a recipient of a Cultural Awards Scheme grant from the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). This visit also coincides with the 2006 'Year of Exchange' which aims to broaden and strengthen Australia-Japan relations, a program also sponsored by North West Shelf LNG. Mr Elliott's visit is hosted and coordinated by the Biennale of Sydney.
