BRAVO BELLINI! VIRTUOSITY AND VERISMO IN ITALIAN OPERA OF THE 19TH CENTURY
The direction of Italian opera changed abruptly around the mid-19th century for policital and musical reasons: the rise of nationalism and the reaction against - or answer to - Wagnerian music drama. A brilliant, but by now conservative tradition represented by the likes of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti gave way to the realism (It. verismo) of Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Verdi and Puccini. This unique insight into Italian opera of the 19th century will trace this development , providing extensive musical illustrations and specific references to literary influences.
