Named as one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time Magazine in 2005, Peter Singer is currently Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University, president of Animal Rights International, a vice-president of the RSPCA in the UK, and a member of Oxfam America's Leadership Council. Professor Singer will speak about the ethics of food: not only the ethics of eating animals, but also the environmental and global implications of the way we produce, distribute and market food.
Peter Singer was born in Australia and educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. He has taught at universities in England, America and Australia, and is now Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University.
Peter first became well-known internationally after the publication of Animal Liberation. His other books include: Democracy and Disobedience; Practical Ethics; The Expanding Circle; Marx; Hegel; How Are We to Live?, Rethinking Life and Death, One World, Pushing Time Away, and The President of Good and Evil: The Ethics of George W. Bush.
Two collections of Peter's work have been published: Writings on an Ethical Life, which he edited himself, and Unsanctifying Human Life, edited by Helga Kuhse. Together with his wife, Renata Singer, Peter has edited The Moral of the Story: An Anthology of Ethics Through Literature. He is the author of the major article on ethics in the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Peter was the founding president of the International Association of Bioethics and, with Helga Kuhse, founding co-editor of the journal Bioethics. Peter also co-founded The Great Ape Project with Paola Cavalieri.
